The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates opened in 2007 after construction began in the mid 1990’s. The Mosque is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, the first President of the United Arab Emirates and the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The mosque fuses Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid styles of architecture. The white marble, sourced from multiple countries, is the most distinguishing characteristic of the structure and is meant to symbolize purity and piety. There are 82 domes of various sizes throughout the mosque and mosque is illuminated at night to reflect the specific phase of the moon.
One of the most striking features of the interior of the mosque is the Qibla wall featuring the “Ninety Nine Names of God.” The names are written in traditional Kufic Calligraphy and were designed by Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi, a Calligrapher from the United Arab Emirates.
