The Jama Masjid of Herat also known as the Great Mosque of Herat was originally built in 1200 CE and has been added on to several times. The Mosque was built on the site of two Zoroastrian temples. The Mosque is organized in an Iwan pattern with three wall and a massive courtyard. The Mosque is known for it’s iconic blue mosaics. During the Anglo-Afghan wars much of the Mosque was destroyed and little of the Mosque is authentic of the original except for the Ghorid portal south of the main entrance.

There are many Qur’anic inscriptions across the mosque made up of mosaics and painted blue and white tiles.
