The Sultan Ahmet mosque, more often referred to as “The Blue Mosque,” was constructed in 1609 and fished in 1616 during Ottoman period. The mosque was built on top of the original site of the palace of the Byzantine emperor.  Six minarets surround the mosque, and the architecture style mirrors that of both the Ottoman Empire and Bryzatine style. The Blue Mosque is considered to be the one of the last architectural wonders of the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan Ahmet mosque is known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles featured in heavy use on the interior of the mosque.

There are many inscriptions of qur’anic verses incorporated into the blue tile interior of the mosque.  Some of the largest inscriptions in the mosque are those that appear on the four large columns in main part of the mosque.

Inscriptions are as follows:

The Cow (Al-Baqarah)

“And when My servants ask thee concerning Me, surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should hear My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way.” (2:186)

“Those who believe and do good deeds and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate- their reward is with their Lord; and they have no fear, nor shall they grieve.”  (2:277)

On the mihrab wall there are also inscriptions, with mention of the Mary and places of prayer.

The Family of Amran (Al-Imran)

“So her Lord accepted her with a goodly  acceptance and made her grow up a goodly growing, and gave her into the charge of Zacharias. Whenever Zacharias entered the sanctuary to (see) her, he found food with her. He said: O Mary, whence come this to thee? She said: It is from Allah. Surely Allah give to whom He pleases without measure.” (3:37)

“So the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: Allah gives thee the good news from John, verifying the word from Allah, and honorable and chaste and a prophet from among the good ones.” (3:39)
